FINAL UPDATE
We collected and distributed $21,750 to 22 disabled elders. Thank you to everyone that donated and supported us in connecting with elders and those that are doing work to support them everday. Thank you to the elders for spending time with us, telling stories and offering wisdom.
What is this fund?
The Disabled Elders Fund is a mutual aid effort to support disabled elders in our communities. 10 or more recipients will receive up to $1,000 to use how they see fit. The goal is to provide direct support for their needs.
How are they selected?
Recipients will be selected by the organizers of the fund, Dustin Gibson and Talila Lewis. If the elders who receive funds give permission, organizers will publish their names and other opportunities to support them and/or their work on this page.
When will they receive the money?
Organizers hope to raise at least $10,000 for this fund. After $10,000 is raised, up to $1,000 will be distributed to at least 10 disabled elders. Incoming and outgoing funds can be tracked at: http://bit.ly/deftracking
If more than $10,000 is raised for this fund, organizers will determine whether to expand the recipient pool and how to move the funds into disabled elder communities.
Why Now?
Disabled elders are the pillars of our communities. They hold wisdom, histories, stories, and languages that are passed down to future generations. In this particular moment we are especially troubled by the exploitation, extraction, and wilful neglect of these community members--many of whom forged the paths for our movements today. In the tradition of our disabled elders, we seek to foreground interdependence as we ensure that our elders are supported by all of us. We hope this fund serves as a collective way for us to offer gratitude and as a reminder of our obligations to care for and materially support our elders. Although no amount of money can convey our deep and abiding gratitude, we offer these funds and uplift their work to carry forward their legacies and as a small token of thanks…
